Sono Io

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

Well, Hello world. It’s nice being disconnected from you!

My skin has been loving Italy. It is amazing what a week of no stress does for you. Sorry life in Vancouver, I may just stay here for a while.

Everything has been smooth sailing since we arrived a week ago today. Chad has eaten a pizza almost every day since we got here, and we have also learned that he does not know how to eat ice cream from a cone. Very interesting.

I love prosciutto and have had it in almost every meal. It is my favorite part of the day.

Through our travels so far we have visited the following…

  • Rome
  • The Vatican
  • The Vatican Museum
  • The Pantheon
  • The Colosseum
  • The Spanish Steps
  • The Trevi Fountain
  • Pompeii
  • Sorrento
  • Positano
  • Capri
  • Praia a Mare
  • Isola di Dino
  • Cosenza

Clearly, we have been doing a lot.

Right now we are at a Holiday Inn in Cosenza. Chad is reading, I’m on the net. The city outside is different. We aren’t in the main centre and it looks pretty sketch outside our window.

So far some of our favorite places have been Positano & Praia a Mare. Positano was amazing, and to us, way better then Capri. We didn’t have time to hit Amalfi, but Positano was amazing enough. Praia a Mare, Chad and I found while doing some research. The town is pretty dead right now because beach season is over, but we found this restaurant, that was about to close, but stayed open so we could have lunch. We really connected with the owners, as we were the only ones there so we chatted through lunch, and they made the whole experience amazing.

I am posting all my photos onto Flickr, so if you want to have a look, and follow along you can here.

I’m going to head off to the real world, and catch up on my reading.

Ciao!

Time To Go!

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

So, believe it or not, I did plan to blog 4 times this week. I actually have all the posts ready to go, but clearly it was not meant to be.

Every night something came up that pushed everything I wanted to do out the window.

Monday – WINE MAKING

Tuesday – BROKEN DOWN CAR

Broken Down

Yea, thats right. Half way home from my Moms house and the Kia died, DEAD. Effffff. On the positive side, Kia took care of it completely and it didn’t cost us anything, but on the negative side, we had to wait out in the chill for over an hour and the night was ruined. Plus, the stress of having to deal with this car, AGAIN, and right before we were about to leave pushed me over the edge.

Thankfully, we picked it up today, ready to go, and it can go to sleep and rest for a month now.

Saturday we had a Good Bye party for ourselves. We spent the whole day preping, and thank God we did because it was the easiest, most relaxed dinner party I have ever thrown. I know I may not have looked relax – to those who were there – but I was. Dinner was amazing (if I do say so myself). We did everything on the BBQ and it was AWESOME. Chad did a great job!

Roasted Pepper & Bacon Bruschetta
Cajun Spiced Pork Loins
Roasted Pepper & Feta Rolled Flank Steak
Garlic Prawns
Arugula Salad with BBQ Onions, Feta, & Tomatoes
Grilled Green Beans with Romano Cheese
Garlic Chesse Bread

Post dinner we had some Limoncello & Peroni Beers and then headed off to the Blarney Stone!

I think it is pretty clear we had a great time!!!

The newly renovated Blarney Stone is so nice, I actually can’t wait to get back to Vancouver to go back! I know, shocking that I am saying this.

I know I haven’t given you much substance to go on while I flee the country, but it’s not like I still have a lot of readers. Pfft.

I will have my Moms mini laptop with me during the trip, so I shall update when I get the chance. I will be posting some of my favourite pictures on Facebook, but will be posting all of my photos on Flickr organized by day, so you can follow along there.

See you later, Bitches!

In the Garden of Nonna

Nonnas Garden

My  Nonna has always had the most epic of vegetable gardens. Neatly organized and spaced out. Every inch of dirt has something growing from it. Vegetables and flowers and fruits all intermingled. Her true passion in life. It’s what has kept her going all these years.

Eating fresh produce from Nonnas garden was always something we did. Whatever was in season, we would eat. Every vegetable she grew was made into yummi dish after yummi dish.

My Mom was never into gardening as much as Nonna was. I guess theres really no point when you have your own Farmers Market 3 houses away (yes, Nonna lives 3 houses away!).

Even though as a kid I was never one to spend hours with Nonna in her garden helping her out, I still appreciated all the amazing food we got from it.

Looking back on it now, I wish I had spent time with her in the garden, but as a kid, when you’re not really interested, you can’t really force yourself to do something just in case you regret not doing it when you’re older.

It’s not until now that I have the ‘bug’ to build a garden. Each year, with each flower I add to my deck, I get the urge for something bigger. The thought of being able to grow so much fresh food, in my own backyard, with little cost and so much pleasure makes me antsy to just go out and do. Even seeing all the vegetables and herbs that were grown at the PNE farm sent me into a gardening frenzy. I feel a passion for it more and more.

I really hope our next place has a little piece of grass for me to play with.

I want to be that old Italian Nonna, always in her garden, feeding the kids Zucchini Flower sweets and figs from the tree.

Where Will Life Take You

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

Clearly the Internet and my two blogs have taken a backseat to this latest explosion of life. There is just always something going on.

This labour day weekend was not really relaxing at all. It was fun, but it seemed like everything I had planned to get done was push aside by the other things that were going on. Here is the break down.

Friday night we made the effort to check out the PNE before the end of its 100th year. We headed down there with the Parental Units, later meeting up with Dario & Kelly, and Ryan & Elise. We attempted to get some food, but no matter how many food booths there are, there is still going to be a mile long line up at each when trying to buy dinner at 6pm. We were in a bit of a rush as we wanted to partake in the annual Super Dog watching that we do, so options were limited. Overprices burgers and chicken strips it was!

After getting our food we made a mad dash to the Super Dogs show where we found seats, scarfed down food, and watched Pups run around. This year they actually had a Beagle, which shocked Chad and I, because in all of our research we know that Beagles are super hard to train off leash since they just follow there nose where ever it goes. It was the cutest thing EVER. I even went up at the end of the night and played with the Beagle. I sooooo need to get one!

After the Super Dogs we stopped by the booth where the Old Man makes all those wooden signs. We contemplated getting one made for the cabin we are planning to build in ten years. Good times dreaming! We have to come up with a good cabin name and then maybe we will get the sign. The parents split with us at that point, and we moved on to the Farm – my favorite part.

There was a baby calf who has been born at 8:15 that morning, some giant horses trying to jump out of their pen (that was kind of scary), bunnies, and pigs andeverything. I was in heaven. There was even this giant garden display that I was obsessed with. I so need a yard and a garden. The Mushroom hut was also insane. Post Farm we scarfed down Corn Dogs. First ever and damn were they tasty! Dario had two…shocking! Haha.

After the PNE we headed over to the Cactus Club for drinks were we proceeded to display the entire contents of our wallets out on the table to figure out who had the most ‘Junk’. I think Kelly one that one, but I was a close second. It’s funny because everything in my wallet has a purpose, to me, but everyone else thought it was junk.

The only sad part about Friday was that I took ZERO pictures. I know, bad.

Saturday I woke up early-ish for a Spa appointment. Oh la la. I partook in my first every facial from Eccotique Spa in Metrotown. It was amazing, and my ‘service provider’ Maria, who was from Peru, was the cutest thing ever. I loved her and will definitely be going back. I’ve only ever gone to Eccotique Spa for waxings and have never done any ‘pampering’ so it was super nice to treat myself. The only not so amazing part of the facial was when they do the ‘extractions’ – they open up your pores and remove all your blackheads. Kind of feels like someone is grating your face. Super painful, but you  notice the difference after which is what I wanted. My face feels amazing now so I am happy!

After the spa I was so relaxed that I couldn’t bring myself to do anything, so I did nothing.

Saturday night we headed over to my parents for the final ITALY meeting. Chad and I put together a binder with all our documents that we will need, lots of maps, and daily plans. Our trip is basically half planned, half not, but we do have an idea of what we would like to do every day. I can’t believe how close we are to leaving!

Sunday morning we were called bright and early by my Mother to inform us that the grapes were ready for wine making season. Because we will be away for prime wine making, we have to do it before we leave, so everyone is in a panic to get’r done. And of course, you can’t do anything until you get the grapes! So, Sunday plans were thrown out the window and we set out to buy and transport grapes, have lunch, take a family trip to Walmart (srsly, who does that) then rush home to get change so we could make our dinner invite in time.

Dinner at my brothers Godparents with my Mom & Dad and Uncle & Aunt was good times. It’s been forever since we’ve been out there, and Chad has actually never been to their house before so that was fun. After dinner we headed out to Ryan & Elises where we snuggled under afghans (Elise & I) and chatted the night away. Since we stayed there till well past midnight, Chad and I were for a celebratory McDonalds cheeseburger to celebrate our 2nd anniversary!

Monday was spent with more wine. Wine, and cleaning, and tyring to be lazy, and getting ready for our anniversary dinner. We were given a gift certificate to Joey’s so we thought we might as well use it for the Anniversary. We went downtown to Joey Bentall One. It was unfortunate that it was so rainy and gross out, because the people watching would have been fun. We spend 2 1/2 hours there, drinking and eating and chatting. Classic Chad & Danielle. We watched every table come and go. Kinda weird, but we don’t care. There is no point in rushing anywhere. Year two is the year of cotton, but we didn’t exchange any gifts. I think Italy in itself is quite the gift so we were happy to skip it.

We were totally drained by the time we got home. So much stuff going on, and still so much to do. It’s fun when you are busy and always have something to entertain you, but it does take a lot out of you.

Onto more things this week! And maybe some pictures!?
