Lately I have discovered that if I am feeling motivated to do something, I should probably take advantage of the feeling and just getter done, despite what other things I may need to do in the mean time. For example, the other night I was going to do the laundry, but got an over whelming urge to clean out my closet instead. So, despite my need for clean clothes, I shoved that aside to happily rummage through my closet re-folding all of my sweaters and making sure everything was hung properly. If I had actually waited until I had the time to clean my closet, I would probably feel way too lazy to do the job and it would never get done.
So, last week, when I started to think about all the things we wanted to get done before we move, I thought, ‘why not just start packing up the things we don’t need?’. The motivation was there, even though we don’t plan to move for a few months, so I took advantage of it. I brought home a bunch of boxes on Friday, and Saturday morning I started on the job. There was honestly a lot of stuff sitting around in our apartment that we hardly ever use. All 30 of Chads “out of date” University text books being one of them.
I guess when I moved into the apartment, I just filled every nook and cranny with stuff to make it feel comfortable and like home, not realizing that the majority of the stuff probably could have and should have gone into storage. My bedroom at my parents house was notorious for having every square inch of it covered in something. It was always clean, but nick knacks reigned supreme. Not to mention, our apartment doesn’t have a lot of storage space, so it feels like everything is visible all the time. There is no real place to hide things that aren’t used on a regular basis.
Now, things are cleared out and there is so much less clutter. Not that I would describe our place as being cluttered, but we did have quite a few nick knacks everywhere, books over flowing, and empty scotch bottles taking over. Not to mention all the items that started to live under the bed because we have no where to put them. It’s nice that they finally have a home in a box in my Uncles basement!
Clean surfaces are so much better. Not only does it look better, but the apartment feels more open and spacious, which is exactly what we want potential buyers to think. When we look at apartments and houses on MLS we are always attracted to the ones who’s pictures show open clean spaces. Photos of cluttered living rooms and kitchens covered in appliances are not appealing at all.
So, yes I have jumped the gun, but who knows how busy we will be in the next coming months. I’d rather get it done now, pack up everything we don’t need and store it, then panic because there is no time. It makes the apartment look better and it saves us time when we finally do move and have to pack everything up.
Can you tell I am anxious to get this ‘moving’ business started?!
